bicycles for the mind

2025-06-20

computers are not bicycles for the mind.

a bicycle won't help you dance, and a screen won't help you think.

your train of thought is not a train, not a tool, not technology. a brain wanders in strange loops and is best when left to simmer. there's no path it's on where a bicycle could be useful. the best you can do is give it a stir and watch it go.

a screen isn't great at accelerating the creativity of human thought, even if it's good at increasing the quantity and speed of the output. a good mind-augmenting technology is one that helps us think better thoughts than we can without it.

everybody knows that good ideas come in the shower. some others:

things that help your brain swirl

writing, programming, etc can be done on a screen, but when it's time to express something difficult, I often turn to pen and paper.

the point of a mind isn't to get stuff done. that's what the hands and legs and hammers and computers are for. when it's time to figure out what needs doing, get off the screen.
