What happens to your brain when you switch to a flip phone?

2025-12-21

You get a little better at knowing street names and you get to feel extra superior to the people watching YouTube Shorts while they drive.

That's it.

You'll probably still be hopelessly attached to the Internet. The Internet is really, really addictive. It took me a long time to log off all the stuff I habitually browsed.

Basically everything you see on the Internet numbs your itch to be out there doing stuff. If it's affecting you, a flip phone is a good first step, but the real change has gotta be in your heart.

You've gotta want to cultivate your own interests bad enough to stop wasting time online. If you're not filling your time with Internet, you've made space for your own interests - a few hours every evening switching between programming and piano and reading is way more satisfying when there isn't scrolling mixed in.

I've been using a flip phone for three years and only now am I comfortably offline in any meaningful way. Being actually offline has made a lot of room for more fulfulling things. I'd like to log back on, but I'll need to ensure I'm not passive about it.
