books!

The origin of consciousness in the breakdown of the bicameral mind! This book sparked my brief adventure in tulpamancy. Screwtape Letters. Recommended because C.S. Lewis's explanation of the banality and effortlessness of sin is incredible and applies to every creed. Every other book I've read is a tie for third.

recipe sites

I really like based.cooking, but I stopped eating meat and it's somewhat difficult to filter out the meat dishes. grimgrains is cute and vegan. clove garden mogs all these, though.

maybe the real based cooking was clove garden all along?

I should probably compile all my favorite recipes somewhere. In the meantime:

Every bread recipe freaks out about weighing to the gram and kneading with the right timing but none of that matters. Yeast can't be reasoned with - you gotta get in tune with it.

Here's some bread intuition:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups warmish water, more if the dough is too crumbly
  • 1-2 teaspoon yeast
  • Honey, if you'd like
  • Oats, if you'd like. Reduce flour if you add more than like half a cup

Mix these up in a bowl, and let it sit covered overnight. When you're ready to bake, take the dough out of the bowl and plop it on the counter.

I preheat the oven to 475 while the dough sits. I use a dutch oven, and bake the dough for about 30-40 minutes with the lid on. I take the lid off and keep baking until it looks good.

money well spent

I've used a flip phone since I was 20 and refuse to carry a smartphone. I use a Kyocera Dura and highly recommend it.

I like Audio Technica ATH-EQ300M because they're nine dollars and are less antisocial than in/over ear headphones. I'd like a pair of comfortable clip-ons with better sound quality. ATH-EQ300M are form over function.

software I actually like

Prod isn't loading this shortcode for some reason :(

The enter, backspace, backslash, [, ], and half the function keys broke freshman year. I finished my CS program without pressing enter or backspace for 3.5 years of the degree. The screen ascended shortly after I graduated, and I've decided that it's a good way for a computer to look.

linux (arch for my laptop and nixos for my server), (neo)vim. I hate plugin churn so I got rid of everything. I'm currently zenning with nothing but the built-in LSP. I program offline these days. Download docs with a built in tool (cargo doc is great) or curl --mirror.

I stopped using ad blockers a while ago. I think it's good to be clear-eyed about the ads for which my attention is being eaten.
